Why does my shot look so horrid?

I am fairly new to using sequencer, movie render queue, and pretty much everything involved with making high quality cinematics in ue5. I feel like my learning is going fairly well but all of my shots just look…bad. I think the concepts are there but not too happy with how my renders are turning out.

Here’s one out of context shot from my over all cinematic.

I feel like it looks okay but still extremely amateur. I’d love to make a shot that makes the viewer feel wowd. So I am looking on any technical tips on how I can get to that next level.(besides the poor audio). I know encoding is messing things up along the way because my image sequences look way better. And I’m guessing my lighting needs a ton of improvement. Also I know it’s a little hard to give valuable input without any of my settings but I feel like there’s dozens of screenshots I could provide. Not sure which ones to include.

story board things first then do a quick previs block out to get your camera angles, camera cuts, composition, timing and pacing down. for something short like this, it would help out a lot.

Currently the camera movement feels very static. Try to animate the camera movement to make it feel less mechanical to the viewer.

Imagine that camera is subject to the forces of gravity and the movement of the robot or the ‘camera person’ holding the camera. Try to mimic how a camera moves when you hold it, imagine it on your shoulder. There are subtle movements in the x, y, z, and also the roll, yaw. Small movements can make a big difference to make it feel more grounded in reality.

You could also try to some subtle animation on the lens ‘zoom’ to accentuate key moments in the action.

Use a camera to shoot some footage in real life to get a feel for how it moves, and watch some movies with hand held camera.

I hope this helps!

It’s part of the learning process, I’m afraid.

The best thing you can do, is take a look at the work of someone you think does this really well.

They will be using tricks to make things look good.

Your job is to watch the vid repeatedly, until you start to recognize what tricks they have used.
