Which path to follow for a very simple map editor

Hello, I’m looking to make a very simple map editor for a small leaning project. The map are fairly simple, 3 dimensional array where each coordinates can be either empty or an instanced static mesh.

I’m wondering if I should make my editor entirely like an in editor level or if editor scripting is advised. Having no experience in editor scripting I’m not able to ■■■■■ if it is worth the effort for something like that.

If you have any advices or links to specific tuto/doc/video that you think are relevant I would be grateful.
