Which folders can be deleted when creating backups for an Unreal 5.7 project?

Which folders can be deleted when creating backups? Is there an official documentation on what is safe to delete? I don’t trust AI answers for important backups.

Checking around the community, there’s no official doc on the matter, as the knowledge comes mostly from practical examples. What’s safe to delete, is the cache, everything that can be generated from the project itself. And said cache, you would clear it anyway when setting up the project in a new station, so there’s no need to back it up.

So, the cache is spread around the following folders in your main directory:

  • Binaries
  • DerivedDataCache
  • Intermediate
  • Saved/Autosaves
  • .vs
  • .sln

You can safely delete those folders for your backup.
