Which 3d software is good for characterization?

Hello Devs,

I am little confused on which software to use for building character, or in other words 3d art.

I can use Unreal since I’m familiar with it’s UI for gamedev but I’ve a little experience back in 2020 with blender when it comes to asset creation.

Now when I reached a stage where I need to create asset of my own, I am confused where I should stick with Unreal and create my asset or should I take my time with blender and practice it.

I just needed your opinion and that’s a lot devs for keeping this community so friendly so I could ask silly stuffs like this

Makehuman, Daz, Character Creator, etc. For custom clothing, Marvelous Designer.

Metahumans look great but their performance is abysmal.

Hey there @L0neLY7! The answer to the question somewhat depends on your goals, your game, and your skillset that you want to acquire. Software dedicated to 3D modeling, rigging, and animation will have more options than using Unreal for your whole pipeline, however using UE for your all in one solution can speed up your pipeline if you don’t need the extended options.

For example, the modeling suite in engine is decently robust, but is recommended more for modifying assets imported from dedicated software like Blender. I use the in engine modeling suite for more placeholder or simple meshes myself.

However on the flip side, the animation suite (including control rig) is so integrated with the engine, it’s very easy to handle the animations in engine without needing to reimport and update them every tweak in an external program.

As for the header question, I agree with Symplex, if you don’t intend to fully hand create your characters and the lower weight variants of the Metahumans are too heavy, most 3D character creation software is supported either natively or through plugins by other developers.

At the end of the day, I would recommend learning both workflows and feeling out what you would personally prefer.
