Where can I find a more advanced landscaping tutorial

I have seen basic tutorials on landscaping but can’t seem to find anything thats more than “Click with the sculpt brush to go up”. more advanced techniques to not make my landscape look like a bunch of blobs I cant find. Additionally, there has to be a better way of painting the material layers than just using a circle to scribble in some very tiled grass.

Sculpting is, really not that hard. It’s just a small collection of relatively simple and self-explaining tools. Landscape materials, the grass output node as well as heightmap/texture generation and importing from 3rd party software is the real deal. Here are some link to get you started:

Make realistic landscape with Unreal can take some time, you’ll need to practice again and again. You’ll probably get a great result at the end. If you want some tips, here they are=>

  • Use different kind of alpha texture (not the default one). This will help you to make it more realistic and get rid of the «blobs».
  • For sure the mesh of your landscape is important, but for me is only half of the work. You’ll need to create a good landscape material.
  • I suggest you to take a look at many video. Painting on landscape it’s nice if you have little landscape or if you need path, but mostly you’ll need automatic material. (You can have automatic + painting material if you want).

(by automatic I mean intelligent, to have the ability to know the angle/height of your landscape, so it will be easy for your material to know where he need rock texture or sand or even grass. Also I suggest you to think about the distance between the camera of your player and the texture you need to render.)

  • From what I know, if you want to paint something else than a circle, you’ll need to use mask in your material.

I’ll come back tomorrow with some picture of my own material (I’m not on my main computer).

I wish this will help you. Also if you have other question don’t be shy and if something doesn’t make sens tell me, english is not my native language, have a good day
