When to pre-render and when to use engine

Hello, I’m thinking about making some very cinematic cutscenes and have seen that there are lots of debates on whether pre-rendered cutscenes are best or engine cutscenes are better. I personally would like to ask for which handles certain aspects best for performance. I would like to know when you would use pre-rendered or engine rendered. Would pre-rendered be best for complex motion, particle effects, or mass groups of characters? or would the Engine be able to handle it with better performance?


you probably have to juggle the end result, if the target platform is multiple places, you’ll have to scale everything in the sequence to handle all of them
vs a video, which will look the same on every device,
vs realtime cinematics, which could possibly be smaller end footprint, and keep consistent with what the player is currently looking at
