When painting vegetation, realtime results don't show until first vegetation cluster painted?

I’m painting some Quixel vegetation onto a landscape while following a tutorial. When I initially click in the brush mode and start dragging around, nothing looks like it is being added into the environment. However, when I finally release the mouse button, all of the vegetation appears (it doesn’t matter how long I wait before mouse release – nothing shows until then). When I go to paint a subsequent patch, now everything shows up in realtime as I’m painting.

In fact, if I paint just a quick burst on a small brush size, enough for just one vegetation mesh to be dropped in after letting go, the realtime painting works after that.

Is this normal behavior others are seeing in 5.4.4? I’m noticing some weird regressions with this engine version as a beginner (e.g., materials taking forever to save/apply) that I’m not seeing in 5.3.2.
