When I try to use the installer, it says that the folder path for "Epic Games" has an invalid character

When I try to use the installer, it says that the folder path for “Epic Games” has an invalid character and the Epic Games setup says that it ended prematurely. I installed UE4 without an issue earlier, but then I had Windows reformatted. I uninstalled the previous Epic games file… so, I don’t know what the problem is.

Hi Chantern,

Do you have any sort of antivirus software running while you are trying to install the Launcher?

Also, do you have any special characters within the filepath where you are attempting to install the Launcher?

I’m getting the same error, I only just downloaded the installer. Running on Windows 10, it doesn’t even attempt to install. I’m running from a folder called /downloads/games so nothing special there.

Hi fraxyl,

Try the steps in this section of the troubleshooting guide.

If nothing works, make sure to post the Installer Logs if they are available.

The problem with running from C: is that Windows 10 is preventing anything from being run from C:. I’m getting the error "Error opening installation log file. Verify that the specified log file location exists and is writable.

Fortunately this lead to a discovery, there was a key in my registry that was pointing the installer to a drive that no longer exists, so I fixed that. But it’s still giving the error about the folder containing invalid characters. ><

I also deleted C:\ProgramData\Epic just in case.

I was able to get the log file to save to my external harddrive and I’ve uploaded the txt to my dropbox: https://www.dropbox.com/s/ok6oone5wjq8o8a/EpicGamesInstallerLog.txt?dl=0

When you go to Control Panel->Programs->Uninstall a program, does the Epic Games Launcher appear in that list? If so, can you right click it and hit uninstall. Also, can you give us more details about the drive that no longer exists? Did it used to have the launcher installed on it?

Well, my computer is under repairs for now, so, when it’s done. I’ll get back to you guys. But, thanks anyways.

Well, mine is windows 7… so…

Hi Chantern,

When you are ready, just post back here and it will reopen the issue.

Cheers,

TJ

the epic launcher doesn’t show up in the programs & features list, the HDD it was installed on crashed and burned along with all my games, it was a separate drive though, my system drive was untouched.

I was got same issue. It could be installed successfully if you delete all registr keys with ‘Epic Games’ keywords. I used ‘Windows 10 Manager’ utility.

I had this issue.

Long story short… I had Epic Games installed on a previous drive. When that drive had an unrecoverable crash, and was removed, the corresponding drive letter no longer existed. (Drive /E:) The letter of the old drive was now my Blu-ray drive. So, I unplugged the burner and assigned the /E: drive to a new external drive. Re-ran the installer without an issue.

I had this same issue regarding Unreal Engine 4. Although I’m using Windows 8.1 64-Bit. Would there be any sort of feasible way of solving this? I had it installed on my C: Drive, but the content was mostly installed to another drive, that no longer works and is dead and gone. Any ideas?

We have the problem with special character can you help us please?
