Whats the best way To handle Character hit reactions base on the incoming hit direction

I will be researching this myself But I just wanted to also ask this question.
Im planning on combining active ragdoll with hit reactions and want the character to respond correctly.
Thinking allowed would a blendspace be the best approach for this or is there superior ways to make the character stagger or fall in the direction that The incoming hit is traveling in

Interested in this kind of interaction too. Need a way to transfer the impact velocity to the character getting hit, and with the capacity to modify how that is applied in various ways for use with different magic spells and their effects.

Physical animation.
The one thing you can sort of rely on physics to not entierly f up.
