What's preventing the UT project from converting?

UT Devs, I’ve successfully built UT on Linux Mint 18, with some changes to the steps listed on the build guide. See my notes on the build guide talk page: (A new, community-hosted Unreal Engine Wiki - Announcements - Epic Developer Community Forums). I am able to run the editor and to open a blank project. However, when I try to open UT, I am asked to convert the project to the new engine version. When I try to do that, the conversion process hangs at 0%. I’ve tried with both the master and release branches with the same results.

On Linux, project version detection does not work properly. You can just choose “Skip conversion” and attempt to open it anyway.
