What should I use?

I’m getting into the animation side of unreal for chars and weps… However I don’t know what program I should use for this. I would really appreciate if some one could give me a pointer to witch program would be the best for me to work in.

Motionbuilder, Maya, or 3ds .

Normally I’d put Blender on there, but it seems people have great difficulty with animated meshes and Blender.

Well if you can afford the price tag Motion Builder all the way.

First FBX is native to MB. It’s where the format originated so as far as connectivity with UE4 goes it does not get any stronger than that.

Second it cuts through motion capture like a hot knife through butter.

Third a single individual can stack an entire base animation one on top of the other using takes and make on the fly re-targeting using non-destructive rigging as well as do both 1st, 3rd person animations at the same time as well as matching weapon animations. None of the fake stuff and you can sync up things like reloads perfect.

Forth updates to the source control is managed by exporting each clip as a single take based on the take name so once exported to FBX you hit reload on the batch export and it updates everything for you in one go.

I could go on but don’t want to sound like an ad  but I’ve been using it since the the Freelancer days and there is nothing better.

With blender there just seems to be a few nuisances that you have to get used to and understand. Once you get past that I don’t mind saving the cash and not have adobe cut through my wallet like butter, its just time with tools.

Also with there Blender .FBX / UE4 push that they are doing many of those issues are being addressed I believe.

Cheers

I personally would use blender because it is for free and in my case it works really well

+1 to Motion builder and Maya. I’m not terribly familiar with Blender’s anim tools, but I’ve heard of others having success with them, too, if you’re on a budget.
