I’ve been downloading the Unreal free monthly models that I have collected over the years to try to get the best idea of material and texture workflow. I keep seeing the below type of master material, I have no clue what this type of material is even called or where to find anything about it. Ive been looking for days. Does anyone know?? What is it and how does it work?
Hi sivartdod,
I wouldn’t say that is a typical master material at all - it looks pretty specific, it has “Channel Packing” - the Alpha of the Base Color texture is used for the roughness and has it’s own emmissive color.
I’d tend to look more at something like the megascans master materials to get an idea…
Hi, Thanks for your reply.
Ive seen this exact material type in several models but you’re correct, most models ive downloaded have the usual master materials. Im more intrigued than anything because its so tidy and organized. Im just wondering how it works and where it came from, was thinking its possibly an export option in Maya or Substance Painter since ive never used those before, I have no clue haha.
It could well be - it’s not very efficient though - a color can be described with 1 pixel…
I think that is just a lighting debug helper.
It shows common materials used in the project so you can look at them in various lighting situations to make sure they are physically correct.
Great! Thanks for both of your replies!
