I just started learning game dev and buying a new pc is not an option for me. Can you please suggest me the appropriate version of UE is should install?
Hey there @smoll_witch! Welcome to the community! The Macbook Air M1 is technically compatible with all modern Unreal Engine version assuming your OS is up to Sonoma 14 and minumum Xcode version can go up to 15.2, however it’s a bit weaker than I would recommend when working in Unreal Engine 5+. 16gb of RAM is the minimum you would want to run UE5, but it’s recommended to have more due to the heavier nature of UE5.
I would recommend working with Unreal Engine 4.27 for a much more comfortable performance profile. It’s much more light weight in comparison, and can still teach you how to use the engine itself for when you can upgrade to a stronger system. While the tradeoffs of not being able to use much of the new tech, you won’t run into as many performance roadblocks while building your game.
That said, both versions are free so feel free to test both, you’ll likely see what I mean rather quickly.

thank you so much for this. currently I am testing the 5.2 version. I will try 4.27 too. I have been running into some issue like lagging and crashing.
4.27 should be more than acceptable performance for that system, however if you do plan to utilize UE5, I do recommend working out an upgrade when you can, as the rising costs of computer parts may make it harder to do so in the future. Good luck with development, and don’t hesitate to ask questions, we’re here to help!
