I am a long time using autodesk maya 2016 to game development in unreal 4, but as I do not know much modeling I think little maya stuff but I think a lot about 3ds finally have much difference from one to the other even though the same company?
Does not matter at all.
Both are just as good, just work slightly different.
I suggest you also take a look at modo & zbrush.
Blender is also a good (and free) option.
As a 3dsmax fanboy i would suggest checking out modo and zbrush, but if you are tight on cash… you cant go wrong with blender!
Blender is crap, it was because of him that I switched to maya, but my problem is the same course of characterization at Maya

Maya is a better animation tool whereas 3DS Max is better for modeling, texturing and meshing models.
