What is .pfm?

Hello,
I want to use nDisplay and stumbled across the .pfm format, which kind of seems like the thing I search for to project onto a Dome. But I have no real clue how to generate such a file. I know its structure from following sources:

PFM Format Description or PFM Format Documentation

But all these refer to it as an image. But I thougt we are talking about telling nDisplay how it needs to warp its rendered image, so it doesn’t look weird on the curved surface, hence it should be geometry inforamtion. I know rgb and xyz are pretty replaceable, but I am not entirely sure of what an xyz representation of the raster data in the pfm file would stand for. It felt to me like an offset to the normal flat projection plane per pixel. But for that I need informations about the projection plane first. That’s what I mean with not knowing what it stands for, because it needs some background information and conventions if it is used as a geometry file, doesn’t it?
I am kind of stuck at this point. The whole mpcdi standard is a big question mark to me, althoug reading through the documentation of 2.0 (which isn’t even supported by nDisplay)…

Thanks for any help, I need some additional infos here
