Bink is marketed in the 4.27 release, as some new fancy thing, like oodle when falling behind the last generation of video formats, like vp8. What is bink useful for when legacy formats can effortlessly be handled by all systems, with no cost and open source?

Epic owns the BINK technology. Of all of the options available owning your own tech is always the best option. For example some codex require licenses and fees to be paid. Some under open source are not always compatible with the Epic license as to inclusion.
