What do you guys think makes a good horror game from the music, jump scares or enemies?
All of the above. But nothing is more horrifying the fear of the unknown. Imagine having all of your senses: sight, sound, taste, touch, and smell stripped away during your sleep.
You awake and…
The question is… would you ever wake up?
I think the music and sounds make the horror genre more eerie and put you on the edge of the seat. And you know that is a good question. Without the sense of hearing no one could wake you and without sight how would you know if you really are awake. I don’t think you would wake up.
Horror is one thing, Terror is another (in the context of: something that causes very strong feelings of fear). I was working on a FPS Survival Terror. I reference real-world terrors and phobias. I think that is a good place to investigate into fear, to include superstitions.
That’s helpful. I am wanting to make horror games and I don’t think I would have gone that direction of using real-world terrors and phobias. But that’s smart adding that in the FPS.
Look at the Thief 3 mission “The Shalebridge cradle” for some good reference. Also, Jump scares are over used. Try something that builds up tension and doesn’t relent! Now that’s scary! (Objects that you wouldn’t expect to be scary made scary really mess with people too!)
Yes jump scares are over used. It’s the basic thing people use. But I have played some good scary games to use ideas plus scary movies. On top of that I have a very demented mind. Haha. And messing with people’s minds is probably the best thing to do. Thanks for that tip.
In my opinion the atmosphere makes a good horror game -> so the level, particle effects, music,…actually everything
When the atmosphere is right, you dont even have to include something like jump scares, because the player constantly thinks, that something will happen
