Ugh. I’ve just played a game that is EXACTLY what I wanted to make. Seriously, it’s like they read my design document. And as it is by a group of people, it is far better and more intricate than I could manage.
I’m only a hobbyist, so I’m not going to be able to do the “same but MOAR!” thing, to try and top it.
I’m so pleased that this game is out there, but it has given me pause about what I want to to do by myself.
I suppose it has given me the freedom to cut some corners, and do it in a different style, play around with visual shorthand the way Indies do, be a bit more playful, rather than deadly serious about it (well, about as serious as a hobbyist can be).

Anyone else had this problem?

Interestingly, I was working on a book for a while that I wanted to turn into a game, I was about halfway through my initial outline and setting up how I wanted it to turn out when FFIII came out and had an almost identical world situation (a few differences here and there of course) with nearly identical themes. The only significant difference was that they were utilizing the JRPG combat format and I was going to move more towards a third person action/adventure style. I scrapped the idea and began work on some other projects I had in mind instead.
I had that great idea about making asteroids game on planets orbit. Game was quite advanced, but I had big problem. I wanted to make it bit less arcade and tiny bit more tactical. But for this i needed bigger maps (or playable area).
And that was kind of impossible to achieve on tiny phone screen. So I was thinking about going just plain ol flat asteroids.
i discovered this on : www…com/watch?v=8vfBRZSDRDU
My idea was basically Stardust clone from ps3, and i never seen stardust. But because platform was mobile phones, i could not get nowhere near that amount of particle effects.
So now I am making flat asteroids game. Beta of it (or early version is kind of done and on apple store). I plan a lot more for it in near future (after summer).
In short: i evolved idea of my game, i still have some great mechanic ideas that hopefully i can implement.
I see loads of my ideas appear in games, films and books. Some things have shown up in films this year that I had in role playing games I wrote in the 80’s but never pushed out of my circle of friends (paper and pen style). Some of my ideas have been totally that, ideas yet I see them in resent games and films as if my mind has been read. It makes me smile to think others think like me, but makes me want to work faster to get my ideas on paper or on the screen quicker. Yes people will compare some of my story or game ideas to others but I know I thought of them first and as long as I enjoy the journey I don’t care if we all end up at the same place. My advise continue with your project. You may find that little spark that makes your game stand out more.
Most ppl i know, steal my jokes!
When i walk to a party and they still had their laughs with my jokes, i have nothing interesting to tell, and have to walk home alone.
Protection, we need protection!
I have a project that I had been doing a bit of work on for a while and someone else started doing the same thing—but they weren’t doing as good of a job and they didn’t finish it so it seems to be ok
If someone makes my game I don’t know what to do. I will just continue because mine is better of course. I have spent so much time on my game that I surely won’t stop just because I would have one competitor. Games are really individual and I can’t imagine anyone creating a game 100% as I do. There will always be differences, either in art or story or gameplay.
This very same thing happened to me and my team, back several years ago after Arma II release the mod DayZ was submitted to “Make arma not war” contest and crushed the hearts of 7 passionate hard-workers. Since we have built upon our losses and devised a master weapon to slay those who have opposed us!! our product hit Steam markets and gave us a renewed hope!!.. A completely different game!
Work began immediately! The design document wrote it self seemingly.
Its been 4 LONG years and we are nearing one epic release date!<3
No matter if the game is identical in ideology, DON’T BE AFRAID you need to BE THE ONE to break your original plans and make better games without total sacrifice. Yeah, Some of the “Cool” features will be different but its only a matter of time before you see your heart grow fond of other game mechanics, aspects or play styles.
Bah. Who needs zombies or COD clones, i mean really, anyways the market is flooded with those games, take another path and claim your own land.

That actually happened here on the forums. I had been working on a space battle match-3 game had to toss my hands in the air like I just don’t care when someone posted up their finished product that looked much prettier than what I was doing.
Writing a manuscript turning it into a game is my idea!
Only I would be able to find my idea already out there from a thread that is specifically about finding out your game idea is already out there…
Seriously though.
, I suggest you make your idea anyway.
Why?
Because as you develop it, the game will change.
It won’t be EXACTLY the same, and it may even be better.
I mean, if people didn’t play off DOOM…
We wouldn’t have BLOOD, Shadow Warrior, etc.
I have faith that your idea is different enough and unique in it’s own way that it will reach an audience.
Here’s some closing piece of advice:
If you think you created something original, you just haven’t been looking.
What happened to you, happens to the best of us.
Carry on and try and to make YOUR game different.
Add just something small.
Since you’re a hobbyist… just make sure a you write a good story (something I assume the other developer didn’t do).
If you need some help or ideas on how to spice up your game, feel free to ask.
