What do you call the person/job who conceptualizes a game?

I’m talking about the person who comes up with the initial idea and can describe it on a single page. The movie industry uses a “treatment” which is the script/story boiled down to 1-2 pages.
In my previous projects, mostly music and videos, I was the idea maker, the creative director and the business manager as well and never really thought about job titles.
What do you call the actual job title of the person who creates the first initial idea, the vision, and has the professional capacity to explain it clearly.

Creative director sounds about right. Or some other kind of director. Designer also makes sense.

Thank you. I’m looking for someone to only create the concept atm. and not necessarily become a part of the development process, unless it’s the right longterm fit. Similar to what a concept artist does, or a “theme developer.” Initial Designer maybe.

That is the life of a designer. They are involved in pre-production mostly (bigger studios employ them throughout production). Developer is also a good term you have there.

But this is for the idea as to what you’re saying. If you need someone to make the core mechanics of the game, in engine, then you want an engineer instead. Probably called a gameplay programmer or systems engineer, depending on the kind of game (like fps vs puzzler for example).

Generalists may also work as a better long term fit. This sounds like what you are, and every generalist has general skills under multiple disciplines. They can fill most roles if the need be while having strengths with specific responsibilities. Its a per basis thing though.

Generalist Designer! Thank you Conrad. You’ve brought up quite a few words I can feed into search engines. Good weekend to you!
