Weird editor behaviour when I plug in a gamepad

Hello, this is an I never thought I’d have. Its really weird.

I have a logitech gamepad that I usually use with Unreal4 without any problems. Today I took the gamepad circuit board out of its plastic housing with the intention of modding the gamepad, and I plugged the exposed board into my pc to see if it still worked.
I fired up Unreal4 to see what would happen and that’s when the madness started. The normal 3D editor viewport where I do most of the work started to behave like it was a first-person view with physics, and the “viewer” fell straight through the floor. To be clear, I definitely wasn’t “playing in editor” in the usual sense, because when I pressed this button, the editor started behaving as normal and I could play the game in the editor viewport with the gamepad behaving perfectly well. However, when I went back out of “play in editor”, the viewport fell straight through the floor again. I could move forwards and backwards in space but just kept falling.

What’s going on? Can anyone think of a reason this might be happening and how it might be connected to the gamepad? The problem only occurs if I start the editor with the gamepad plugged in, behaviour is normal if I restart the editor without the gamepad.

What brand is the gamepad? XBox 360 controller has got no issues with mine - it’s what you want to use in general.

It’s likely that the gamepad is sending a command to the editor, this can happen at times, maybe one of the analog sticks is slightly off-center

If the viewport is moving straight down, check that the triggers are working properly. Left trigger moves the viewport straight down, right trigger moves straight up.

Taking the casing off the controller may cause the “Dead Zone” for the triggers to expand, the casing could be used to limit the range (depending how your controller is set up). You might need to re-calibrate the controller in Windows before opening the editor again (can do this in Control Panel -> Devices, right click on the gamepad there should be an option to re-calibrate).
