Weapon Bones

I have been messing around with my skeleton in Maya 2018 for awhile and I was wondering about if i placed a bone extending from the palm so I could use IK for precise weapon strikes. With a sword in mind, the bone would extend to the tip so i could animate the sword tip towards the target instead of animating the wrist bone. If i were to do this should i make 2 skeletons for equipped and unequipped? Or would this method only work for a constantly equipped character?

Overall im new to this so animating the wrist with a socket might be the better way to go… im open to any input/suggestions/answers :smiley:
