Water\Landscape

Hello. I create an open world 3rd person project. I create ocean (water body ocean) and land layers. But suddenly, when i tried to sculpt landscape layer there happens some kind a invertion (high areas go down and low areas goes up). In this way my ocean “flies” above landscape. I tried to fix this by myself and now UE5 just freeze dead when i clicking on “landscape mode”. In my first project was the same problem. Why does it happens? please help!

Hey there @Black_N0ize! Welcome to the community! The way the water system blends with landscape is a bit rigid before you play with the settings a bit. So when you create the landscape make sure edit layers are enabled first and foremost. (you can enable it in the details panel if you hadn’t already but it sounds like you have it already).

Next we’ve got a landscape and the ocean. I just added some spline points to mine to make it a bit more interesting.

Now, when you are working with the landscape system with edit layers enabled, you have to work from a new layer to add any changes to the landscape that will work outside of the water system. This is because the water system edits the original landscape layer. Thus anything you paint there will be adjusted based on the water system’s setup.

So let’s get you a new layer to sculpt on. Just right click on the edit layers area and create a new one. Now all changes you make to that will ignore the water’s influence.

You’ll need to play with the ocean’s settings a bit to get the base working well for some game types. The water heightmap settings are crucial in this.

A good video to learn a bit more about it:
