Wall sizes and UV's

Howdy partners,

Since a month i am responsible for designing modular pieces for a 3d shooter. Think about walls, floors, pillars, etc
I got a set in different dimensions. Example wall : 1024x1024 and 1024x512 and so on.

Question would be, how to tackle the UV space? When i make the 1024x1024 UV a 4 K map. Should i make the 1024x512 2K ? Or the same?
Somehow is see it makes difference, but just cant get my head around proper.

Any help around?

Tnx in advance

Hi Monk83,

Some of your questions are a little hard to follow, but if you’re wanting the basics of modular design that shouldn’t be a problem.

There are multiple ways to go about making modular pieces.

Working out the concepts and planning would be a good start. Figure out what types of pieces you want to make. If they are using repeating textures and are these pieces all using the same texture. If you are using a single texture to make multiple objects then knowing how your texture will be laid out would be a good focus before modeling.

Some good sites with tips for modular design are:

Thiago Klafke’s: Creating Modular Environments
and Epic’s own Kevin Johnstone has a good Power Point presentation for setting up modular pieces for the grid. While there is a presentation it may lack context in some places but you should be able to see what’s going on and how to use it to your advantage.

You can you also use any power of two image size you would like, but will need to set this up in your material within UE4.

If you have any other questions or need more clarification feel free to ask!

Thank you Tim,

I will take a closer look to your link’s.
The concept art is done and i can follow most of my own design. I choose for simple design for big shapes. Add in hero pieces and such in the end.
I hope my stress will be relieved in some hours

tnx

Yup, higher the better. I take that in mind.
Tnx for the sizes
