Video with alpha on a plane

Hi, is it possible to play a video with an alpha channel on a plane in Unreal? I thought this would be possible by now, given UE’s focus on virtual production. I’m using UE 5.2.1. I’ve tried Apple ProRes 4444. Unreal just won’t even recognise there’s an alpha channel there. Will WebM work? When I searched the forum for WebM it seems like it’s really unstable and also couldn’t see any mention of alpha in relation to it. There’s the classic solution of making an alpha channel video to use as a mask, but that’s significantly increasing my workload.

I’ve got the Post Processing alpha channel set to ‘linear colour space only’ in project settings.

My solution is HAP Media plugin from standard plugins and use .mov with HAP encoding. Perfect alpha result and performance.

For converting to HAP i use free Shutter Encoder

Thanks! Can I ask what your workflow is for this? I’m struggling to get the alpha channel in the HAP file. I’m using Davinci Resolve to edit the video. Then exporting as Quicktime using DNxHR codec to get the alpha. I’ve tested bringing the video back into Davinci to test the alpha channel worked and it has, but it seems like maybe Shutter Encoder isn’t picking up the alpha channel. I’m encoding to HAP Alpha, but in Unreal it’s not seeing any alpha information.

Ah, I got it working. Instead of exporting with the DNxHR codec from Davinci, I used the GoPro Cineform codec, set to RGB 16-bit. Shutter Encoder picked up the alpha channel correctly after that. Thanks a lot!
