Veteran C++ developers: How did you succesfully start using UE?

I am a veteran C++ developer with 20+ years of experience and every time I try to start using Unreal Engine, I just wind up rage quitting. I absolutely despise Unreal C++, a macro infused abomination. I would really only like to use Unreal Engine for the rendering but use of the editor is forced on you, turning the whole experience into a nightmare. I am a coder, not a graphical designer. Doing anything in a blueprint or a material is just such an incredibly slow process. Making a change means having to realign and restructure everything else. I would be so much more efficient if I could code or script it, so I feel like I am wasting my time at every point…

So I wonder how anyone with a similar background as mine made it work for them?
