Vertex painting not working?

Hi,

I opened a new project, made new material, applied it to a chair in the ‘blank’ level, set up the material as in the attachment, pressed ‘apply’, made in instance, dragged it onto the prop, selected mesh paint mode, ticked the red channel, unticked the rest and… nothing happens when I ‘paint’ onto the prop. I have no idea why not. Been following instructions in Vertex Painting in Unreal 4 - part 1 - YouTube, (Vertext Painting in Unreal 4 - part 1, barry lowndes.)

It seems so simple, I can’t see why it isnt working.

What have I missed?
Thanks.

It’s working fine on my end. Are you sure you applied the material to the object and/or all of it’s material slots?

I reassigned the master material to it in the chair/instance/details/material, and found that mine does the exact opposite:-

(green + blue + alpha) ticked + shift paints red

rgb ticked paints white. good
blue ticked + shift paints yellow
green ticked + shift paints magenta
red ticked + shift paints cyan
(red + alpha) ticked + shift paints blue
Just red, or just blue, etc, and no other keys held down doesn’t paint anything.

Still puzzled here…

Okay, it seems that I needed to start by erasing all the white colour on the object BEFORE painting colours onto it.

I had the same problem but mine was due I think to the fact that I was using the default box which has very few verts to paint on.

Yep, objects are imported/created by default with all white vertices (1,1,1) which means all channels are being painted at full strength, you can either set the import settings for the mesh to override the vertex colours to pure black (0,0,0) and reimport, or paint all vertices on the object black before starting (select r, g, b, and a, then sift+paint the whole object).
