vertex color?

When I export hi res obj with vertex color “true” I then can’t see this vertex color in any baking soft,3d soft or Zbrush. Have just tried in Blender , also nothing.

Am I missing something?

Another question? Can I make super big thing be exported in not so tiny gazillion pieces ? Rather each piece around 18 mil importable in Zbrush

Hello!

MeshLab open vertex colored OBJ from RealityCapture without problem. As far as i remember Marmoset Toolbag too.
So probably you missed something in export settings.

Regarding second question, that mostly question to your scan and zBrush itself.
If You just try use RAW 200-500mln poly from High resolution, in most cases you just need simplify it to something smaller.
For objects up to 4m tall 17mln poly usually more than enough for store all details up to 1-0.5mm on 8-16K tangent space normal map.

Hi kir238

Vertex color in OBJ is supported by just very few application as its outside of OBJ compatibility ( Zbrush say they support it ).
If need vertex colors you need to use PLY format.

Thanks for advices. I actually tried with Zbrush and saw no vertex color/polypaint at all. Maybe missed something.

As of using vertex color my main question is whether it’s a god approach with super hi res meshes? I get somehow not crisp enough textures with texture projection on imported low res retopo models so I wonder if vertex color would be a good substitution to bake down to texture in 3d party texture bakers? I have to use bakers anyway to bake depth/ displacement textures for low res imported model since RC can’t do such textures I guess.

Can it? I mean I don’t need 500mil poly mesh really , I need it baked into displacement texture for low res 10k poly model.
Would be super helpful if RC could do just displacement texture from point cloud without wasting time to meshing it.

I think that vertex color will always be worst than a textured model with regular settings.
And you can easily end up with a few dozens of them on a quite large model with mm accuracy.

Few dozen texture files? I don’t understand actually how can I do this. Whenever I try to export with multiple textures the soft always does a single one. Should I follow some specific rules for that?

The help has a small section regarding it and I don’t understand a thing. It always comes as a single file whatever I set in export dialog.

You need to specify the number of textures and resolution in the texturing settings.
In some cases, if you don’t have enough quality on your sources images, you will not be able to reach the number of textures you specified. RC does not seem to upscale the textures and that is a good thing.

Thanks Jonathan

Same issue here. Can’t seem to import Vertex color when opening OBJs export from reality capture. :frowning:
Anybody found a fix or clarification on this?

Cheers!
