Hi All, Does anyone use UEFN to run classes or live educational workshops in? Specifically classes on game design / UEFN. I teach game design online at SNHU and am curious. We teach Unreal, but I’m also an old guy with a doctoral degree, more a designer, 3D modeler, with exp in VRChat, Sansar, SL, VNet, FrameVR - etc and am hesitant to invest time in yet another platform. Thoughts on the idea of live in UEFN classes, value to game students, and/or interest in sharing / developing resources for classes (and teaching your own classes) are welcomed
Hey, there are some Docs here
and a few Educational Resources here
I did have a chat with someone who was using UEFN in his classes, there was an issue as his institution had an automatic back up system and UEFN is incompatible with certain backups like OneDrive. The solution was to store Projects somewhere that did not have auto backup on, like a removable Hard Drive.
It was a while ago and I can’t find thier name, remember the date or keywords, if I do, will post back.
For game designing it is great, a very easy program to pick up and start running with, the existing model library makes it just like a 3D art program.
Some of the models available are Devices which are used to design the gameplay elements.
The Verse scripting that is available, is optional, but provides a lot more possibilities.
You can test pretty much straight away in the game environment, which is probably great for beginner students.
It is restricted somewhat to certain fortnitey style and elements, but with Verse, custom materials & models, these restrictions can be changed a bit.
I think it caters quite well to all student levels, simple enough for beginners to get up and running quickly and plenty of depth for advanced students to get into.
Like other platforms it has plenty of aspects great for groups to work on a project in thier assigned roles.
Thank you - this helps, my students are juniors & seniors in Southern New Hampshire University’s online game design program. We teach Unreal 5 (I teach Unreal 5, but again I’m old, more of a designer, and learned a ton of “other” platforms) I’ve kinda done versions of these with them. They do a creative skill building exercise, then make an educational (or art) installation, space, presentation, or performance. So, yes this is helpful / adaptable.
I don’t think storing work is an issue, we can do Git & Bitbucket (and I generally require video / screen captures)
The kicker (and maybe the main difference?) is that its all 100% online and we run live meet-ups and I do demos, review work in progress in the online 3D (and/or VR) space. Mostly as free Summer mentorships. Here’s a link if you are curious: Isovista
On that note, I didn’t see live in game meet-ups in my quick skim. Will check again when I have more time. If you have an example (live in world classes) - sharing that would be great. Especially if they teach at another university (as keeping up with our competition is often a better way to get administrative support than the more risky path of being an innovator)
thanks again
Steve
