using paper2d flipbook animatiokn for the facial features of a 3d character

well, the title sort of says it all. I’d like to animate the face of my characters in 2d and attach to the 3d models, and drive the different expressions using blueprints, probably an FSM. Has anyone done anything like this? i’m pretty confident it could be done, just looking for some ideas.

I’d be interested in hearing not only ideas, but if anyone has worked it out for themselves, a mini tutorial would be sweet.

thanks-

Could you provide a video example?

Otherwise you could definitely run a flipbook over the face of a 3D object so as long you make sure it’s facing the camera(since it’s 2D).

basically, any 3d ps1 game would have a simple shape for the head and the facial features like eyes and mouths would often be textures that would be swapped out kind of like this from megaman legends :megamanlegends116-610.jpg
