I downloaded UE 4 to learn but due to time restraints never got around to much. I now have more time, and saw that UE 5 is available. If I go to the Epic Launcher in top right it just shows to launch UE4.27. How can I ‘upgrade’ to the new UE5?
You need to install it separately, there’s no upgrade:
upgrade
If you have a project in 4.x and now a fresh install of 5.x, launching the project will prompt you with an option to convert the project to the newer engine version. Which may or may not work, depending on the complexity.

Welcome to the Unreal Engine Community Forum. You can add other versions of Unreal Engine by going into the Library of the Epic Launcher, navigate to the Unreal Engine section and click on ‘Add Versions’. You can choose the version you want from the drop down at that point. I hope that helps!
