Unreal start time

I’ve come from Unity, and thought I would give Unreal a try. So far, after a day or so of near constant fiddling, I’ve had Unreal run once, and it ran ‘fine’, the rest of my time has been spent waiting for infinite progress bars.

I have a 2060 RTX card 32gb of RAM the Unreal package is installed on my standard ‘spinning’ (not SSD) drive. The update to 5.1.1 took around 3 hours to install and download - I am on a 150MB connection but was getting around 17mb download speed).

Times are like this:

Create a new ‘vanilla’ project, with standard assets included.

Splash screen appears

‘Compiling shaders’ appears and starts at around 6000. Then I wait for around an hour as the number creeps downwards.

Unreal then starts!

It is as if my computer has gone into the 1990’s and downgraded itself, but only for Unreal and nothing else. Is there a setting I’m missing? Is my computer simply too slow? Is this normal?

It’s normal. First time you have to wait for the shaders… :sunglasses:

Thanks! I actually found a way to speed up the process following this tutorial - in case anyone else experiences this:

This did the trick for me!
