Unreal keeps crashing at startup, error: cache path longer than 119 characters - how do i fix?

Hi! I’ve been using unreal for a week now and everything went fine until I tried to change where the cache is stored, because it started taking up a lot of space on my harddrive and slowing down my computer. I did this by going to editor preferences > global & changing the path for both local and shared data from my C:/ to D:/ drive.

After this I was prompted to restart the engine, which i tried to do, but now whenever i try to upen a project or just launch the engine, I get this message:

313066-cachecrash.png

And when I click ‘OK’, unreal immediately crashes - so i can’t change the cache file path back to the original the same way i changed it to begin with.

I’ve tried googling, and tried changing the code in engine > config > BaseEngine.ini under [DerivedDataBackendGraph] back to the original (by removing all that says Editor Override or similar)

I’ve also tried uninstalling and re-installing unreal 4.25 twice, but the problem still remains. I couldn’t find an answer to this anywhere when googling either, so I’m at a loss as to what to do, and also have a project deadline tomorrow.

Does anyone have a solution or tip that could be useful?

I’d be very grateful for any help.

Did you check the AppData\Local\UnrealEngine folder? Unreal keeps settings there.

thanks

Can you post the log file from /Saved/Logs

i think the issue with LocalDataCachePath how i can return it to default?.
i reinstall the engine along with the epic launcher and its still the same issue.

Try to shorten your paths folder names. Error is :

Cache path C:/Users/AHMED Z/Downloads/MW Mountain Redwood Trees Forest Biome 4.26/MW Mountain Redwood Trees Forest Biome 4.26/DerivedDataCache is longer than 119 characters...

Eliminate one of MW Mountain Redwood Trees Forest Biome 4.26 folder.
You can select Downloads folder directly. System will create the folder named for the project.

thanks but it keeps crash on startup means cannot create that path folder.
that’s weird changing DerivedDataCache from the editor then its not possible to make the engine works again.
i uninstall then reinstall the engine and it keeps the same issue

Its crashing on startup, because you have very long path for the project. Move project somewhere else with shorter folder names and double click the uproject inside of project folder.

hi
I find the problem and fixed it.

win + R and then open Run.

type regedit and ok.
go to “HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Epic Games\GlobalDataCachePath” and change “UE-LocalDataCachePath” path.
