Recently due to several complications that I’ve had to sort out, I have been forced to reinstall Unreal Engine to continue my projects.
However, while attempting to do so, I have run into a problem: the Engine is installed normally up until it gets to the Prerequisites phase, where the installation becomes stuck.
The launcher does not tell me that the installation failed, in fact it tells me nothing at all, all it says is that the prerequisites are currently installing. Forever.
I have waited for several hours straight, but it seems that the prerequisites simply never finish. I’ve tried cancelling the installation and restarting, opening the launcher as administrator, tried reinstalling the launcher, nothing has worked thus far.
What exactly could be causing this problem? How can I, or should I, try fixing it?
To ensure that you have all of the necessary prereqs, download VS2017 Community and install the option UNREAL LAUNCHER. This will ensure everything you need is installed. And, if you do any development and or use plugins you will need VS2017.

Alternate solution - I was having similar symptoms today for 4.20.0 Preview 1, which I was trying to solve using teak421’s advice (thanks) but mine was solved by a simple reboot
In my case, I just had to make sure Visual Studio is closed. It didn’t specify prerequisites are installing or not, it just said “prerequisites”. But I was working on a Unity VR project at the same time, and once I closed VS2017, the engine launched. Reproduced here in 4.22.3.
If that doesn’t fix it, maybe check task manager for a running VS instance
