Unreal Engine Podcasts?

I know there’s the weekly Twitch broadcasts, & I’m wondering if there’s any official or really high quality podcasts centered around developments in the engine & stuff going on at Unreal?

Cheers

Hey Dark Acre! We don’t have any official podcasts, but we’ve talked about putting the livestreams up as a video podcast?

What sort of stuff are you looking for?

Hey, if you have some ideas about what you’d like to see from a podcast, let us know. I think that sounds like a really fun idea.

I love reading your blog by the way.

Unreal Podcast

Well, I’d like something I can listen to in the gym/on the road (so it’d be non-video). I suppose what would be most interesting would be Unreal folks interviewing (or more like just shooting the breeze with) internal devs who work on the Engine, Fortnite, Tournament, etc. & external spotlight devs from the community/professional industry. A mix of behind-the-scenes stuff, personal processes, maybe a to talk about how people go into using the engine/game development in general, tips & tricks, event spotlights, & games in development chatter. How to survive as a game developer. Top games people are playing, or landmark games that really made an impression on them. & I think esp. non-game stuff, like the push to use Unreal for arch-viz & multimedia artwork.

It wouldn’t have to be hours long (though it could be, like the Rogan podcast is sometimes monstrous & it’s just people talking **** ) but something along those lines, & not necessarily a re-hash of things that get livestreamed. If it’s done with specific guests in mind, those kinds of podcasts can be “evergreen” & you can get people going back though to download older highlight episodes (via iTunes or whatever).

Wow, thanks for taking the time to check out the ramblings! It’s been a good exercise keeping a log of the transition so far. The next 4 days should be interesting, as it’s my first time going full production with the engine for the jam…

P.S. When I say “non-video” I mean it shouldn’t require someone to be looking at a screen. I think it’s wise to record it in video & disperse it to YouTube, Twitch, & elsewhere, but having an audio version for download & drop on portable MP3 players would be the target.

This sounds a lot like the Tone Control podcast.

It would be nice to get more general thoughts on dev. Of course, we all have our own list of things we want. I’d like to hear about how devs approached coding a particular mechanic or genre of game. E.g. stealth (I’ve always wondered how they do that Deus Ex HR stick-to-wall cover system is done, and what enables NPCs to see the PC or ignore it, even if it’s head is clearly poking several inches over the table  ). Or hear how bringing in a new feature forced a rethink about how the current engine worked. This is probably too specific or technical for most tastes; it’s just my perfect podcast (for now  ).

DIT: Also, a warts-and-all game jam retro. I know is doing one in eBook form, but it would lend itself to podcast form, too. (Also, the EGX interviews that Dana did on YouTube).

I know this is late - but something educational would be amazing. I like the idea of a tips and tricks segment. I bet there’s a ton of amazing features that aren’t wildly know by anyone but the designers of the engine itself. Maybe the notes/description area associated with the podcast could link to forum posts / tutorials / manual pages / youtube videos / etc.

Something concrete like that is what will get people to listen to every episode.
