when i open unreal engine my pc crashes and gives me an watchdog error

A full PC crash with a watchdog error sounds more like a OS level issue, rather than UE. Opening a project is quite a demanding task, and it could trigger problems affecting the system, like drivers or hardware stability.

We still need to narrow it down, could your provide the exact error message you are getting? Also, does the crash get triggered by other programs? In meantime, please test the following as well:

  • Clean up your GPU drivers using DDU, and get the latest set
  • Update the software related to your motherboard, including the BIOS
  • Remove your current UE engine installs, and get only the latest one (as of this date, 5.8.4)
  • Disable any active overclocks in your system
  • Check your system’s status and temps with HWiNFO
