Unreal Engine is Out of Memory

Starting off with the computer specs:

CPU: 12th Gen Intel(R) Core™ i5-12400F 2.50 GHz
Ram: 16GB
GPU: AMD Radeon RX6700 GDDR6 2000MHZ 10224MB VRAM

The problem: Every time I try to edit a landscape, the editor gives an error of “Out of memory” and crashing, corrupting major parts of my landscape. What are some ways to fix this?

Hey there @BeneiElohim! Welcome to the community! Does this happen for only large landscape instances or any landscape at all?

I am sorry to say this but if you want to avoid a lot of headaches using this engine switch to a NVIDIA GPU. I have had no trouble using an AMD CPU but always had troubles with AMD and drivers and game development related to AMD related GPU even before AMD bought ATI.

Well yes, anytime I deal with landscapes a similar problem occurs.

Do you mean that this is a general problem on AMD GPU’s? I definitely have more than enough VRAM to run the engine.

There were previously some issues with AMD GPU drivers, but since I’ve seen many have been fixed through driver updates. However, in your case if you’re running out of regular RAM it’s not likely the cause here. Are there any other errors appearing in the log when you create a small terrain?

It is more of a tactical decision NVIDIA controls around 80% of the GPU market - I know it will always get more testing - and more churn to fix bugs because it is in the best interests of Epic and NVIDIA. I love AMD as a company but all the way back to Quake 2 engine they have been behind on driver support for Radiant and this continues today.

For me I limit the use to CPU’s and I have 5 NVIDIA GPU’s for testing - I only test on AMD GPU’s if they are supplied to me, I wouldn’t even waste time on an Intel GPU at this point.

I don’t have the resources or time to do more then this as an solo indie developer - or even at where I work I can’t really imagine my CTO forcing us to stop everything to test on AMD only unless it was after the fact.

Sadly, it is hard to reproduce and I do not get any error logs. I will try to reproduce it but the issues start happening the moment i start sculpting on the landscape.

Understandable. If it’s all projects/universal, occurs with all landscapes, and is always just RAM complaining, there’s many possible causes be they hardware (Ram sticks), drivers, or even a rare engine bug. Tough call. If the reproduction works, let me know.
