**Frequently Asked Student Questions - **

Q: I’m a student and I want to use Unreal Engine 4. How do I get rolling?
A: Direct the teachers and administrators of your school to the Sign-Up Form to request licenses for you and your peers. Once your institution is set up, they will issue you a redeemable code that gets you access to the engine.

Also, Students can obtain access to Unreal Engine through our collaboration with GitHub’s student pack.

**Q: **How does licensing work for me? Do I still get updates and source access? What happens after I graduate?
A: Yes! you still get all the updates as well as source while you are enrolled in school. After you graduate, you’ll be able to keep your current snapshot of the engine, but wont get any updates to the engine unless you subscribe again.

**Q: How long do the education codes give us access for? What happens when they expire?
A: Education license codes are good for one year’s subscription. if you are still enrolled after the year is up, they will need to be renewed for the next year by your school.

Q:** I already have an Unreal Engine 4 subscription, but my school is getting me a license as well. How does work?
A: Education license codes will be redeemable toward your account, so you’ll be able to keep your existing log in, and continue without paying until the license expires. Then, you’ll either continue subscription via another education code, or you’ll revert back to the paid subscription model.

Q: Is the program available outside the US?
A: Absolutely. Have your teachers or administrators sign up the same way mentioned above.

That’s a fantastic initiative guys and gals! I’m in touch with the head instructor at the gaming academy in Abu Dhabi, they’re using Unity but have also used UDK in the past. I’ll be sure to pass these details on

whilst I think its good to let people use/learn UE4 for free in school it seems kind of harsh that the students can use the free version to develop there own games and then release them while others that aren’t in school but want to learn UE4 have to pay the sub.

I’ve already asked in the announcement thread but I guess would be a more appropriate place to ask this. How are you guys going to check to see if the students are still students? Will students just need to get new licences from their teachers every 3 years or something like that?

Re-Applying by schools for more licenses?

Would it be possible for a school already signed up for educational licenses to apply for more if circumstances change? What would the process look like for that?

Thanks

Once the school is set up, the faculty will be in direct contact with our staff. They will simply ask for more accounts and we will provide a new code to them.

Teachers will be able to give out personal subscriptions via a code. That code will dictate how long the subscription will remain active. Once the code’s time period is over, the teacher can ask to issue new codes.

Update 10/7: Students can now obtain access to UE4 directly for free through our collaboration with GitHub’s Student Packeducation.github.com/pack

On what level are you licensing to institutions? As in, my university will give an Office 365 licence to every single student, but Matlab is restricted based on course. Can I get my university to sign up so that any student that wants to make use of UE4 can make use of it?

What we give is based on the faculty’s described needs and approval, so it’s up to your professors. So, you can talk with them and see how they want to distribute it.

Starting now, Epic has made Unreal Engine 4 free to use for colleges and universities. The engine can be installed and used on all school owned computers, and personal copies can be provided free of charge to all students enrolled in accredited video game development, computer science, art, architecture, simulation, and visualization programs.

is really great and appreciated. However, I was wondering if institutions and students of programs not explicitly listed in the announcement are eligible for educational licenses.
I am talking about institutes for psychology at universities. The Unreal Enginge 4 is a prime candidate for using in a wide variety of research subjects with virtual realities. In clinical contexts evaluating the therapy of phobias like fear of heights using VR, for example, or for bio-feedback (e.g. binding the heart rate to screen color), or in neuropsychology using VR for early diagnosis of spatial-topographic impairments when the patient is unable to move due to paresis or other circumstances (hospital bed). In social psychology, it could be a means to use VR for researching prejudices by controlling variables like skin color while everything else stays constant. Testing in driving simulations etc., the list goes on and on.

I’m obviously studying psychology and I already did research for spatial learning in the past using the UDK. Now the institute is building a new VR lab. With the C++ source, Occulus Rift support and the Blueprints, UE4 is just more suited. So even if psychology is not listed in your announcement, we do a lot of stuff with computers and simulations. Can my supervisor/adminstrator apply for the educational license? I already talked to him and they’d also pay the 19$ once (for one snapshot), but it would be better to stay updated on the software for further use.

Hi Vaquero,

Your professor can certainly apply for the educational license! Have your professor fill out the form that links to in the OP.

Is it possible for primary schools to claim a subscrition?

Right now it is only offered to colleges and universities. I have actually talked to about reaching out to younger students and he seemed positive about the idea. Keep an eye out for announcements on our blog in case things change.

Will Unreal engine 4 ever be free for non commercial use something like UDK.

So uh, how does work, really?

I just got sent here from github using a link from their student pack which I was recently accepted into. Says it’s a unique link but it only took me to the purchase-page. Filled in my details and figured it was gonna deduct that or something, but instead 19 bucks was deducted from my creditcard. No idea what’s going on. Would gladly pay for this, but since I am using it for educational use and already have way too much bills for my incredibly limited studenteconomy as it is, another monthly bill is not what I am looking for, especially not now since my just broke

Got the same problem. My Student Pack was verified by Github. When I clicked on the “unique link” on the githubg -student pack site - i have set up an account at unreal with the same mail adress but links keeps sending me to a page where i have to put in my credits card infos - at the end of the unique like it looks like a coupon code, i have tried to enter at unreal but it was not valid
