Unreal engine crash on startup, can't open project anymore

I changed some of my code, then compiled and unreal engine crashed. Now everytime I open UE4 it crashes…
How do I decompile or recompile my project?

I tried changing the code but it still crashes on startup.

Is it possible to get my project back or is everything lost?

I would suggest looking at the changes you made between the time it worked and when it started crashing the editor.
I suspect you are accessing a null pointer in a constructor or some other function that is called on load.

I suggest launching the editor from inside VS and place some breakpoints in the constructors of the game mode and any other actor that is constructed on start up.

Looks like you are calling AttachToComponent during a constructor - which isn’t allowed. You need to call SetupAttachment (and you might want to do it in BeginPlay, PostInitComponents, or somewhere else besides the constructor).

attachtocomponent IS allowed in contructor, it worked for me. I found my mistake: I called this in the constructor:


ACharacter* myCharacter = UGameplayStatics::GetPlayerCharacter(GetWorld(), 0);
	SpawnLocation = myCharacter->GetActorLocation();

And thank you Ryan20fun, I build the solution within VS and now I’m able to launch my editor again :smiley:
