Unreal engine and games crashing on game screen/during build.

Hello, i have been playing games that are made on unreal engine and even using unreal engine myself from about 2 years, everything was going smoothly when about 3 months ago, when windows launched their 2025.2 update for windows 11, every thing that is using unreal engine started to crash on startup/when i am trying to test the build in main view port. I tried many fixes that were shown online such as re installing the drivers, setting up the TdrDelay point in registry, closing on screen overlay apps like msi afterburner and RIVA tuner, i even re-installed my windows just in case there was some system error from base drivers but NOTHING seems to work, the day before yesterday, unreal engine crashed due to this problem for more than 45+ times. Today, Nvidia launched their new drivers but that too doesn’t seem to work. i have some screenshots from the games that crashed and no, i have no screen shot of the unreal engine crashing but i think you all might understand my problem. The only thing i can do after a crash is to wait for undefined timed for the game/application to close or just sit there and force restart my laptop.

And no, this cannot be a hardware problem since i am able to run game like Bladurs Gate 3, Elden ring, and ANY other game that was not made on unreal engine on Very High Graphics with 60+ constant fps on 2k resolution.

And sometimes my games go for a splitscreen display while i am playing due which makes everything unplayable like shown in the image below, this happens when i am playing on my external moniter, if i am playing on my laptop, it ususally just crashes, or else it goes static display like in those Old TVs.

My Laptop Specifications are:

i7 13700hx

RTX 4070(8gb)

16 ram

1TB NVME

Hello there @The69thSpy!

That scenario sounds quite annoying, let’s see if we can figure it out.

Your setup does sound powerful enough to tacke the mentioned games, and Unreal Engine itself. And everything was working smoothly up until the Win update 2025.2. Considering the fixes you have tried so far, you covered most of the available paths.

Meaning, the issue should be related to your hardware, UE, or even the GPU drivers, it’s most likely that last Windows update. Considering you already reinstalled Windows, just make sure that 2025.2 update is avoided. You can go to Update History, and uninstall that specific update (entry should be “2025-02 cumulative update for Windows 11”). That should get rid of the problem all together.

If, somehow, the issue persists, following the “lost device” errors you are receiving, there are a few options left. First, test by enforcing DX11 in your games and apps, by adding the -d3d11 on their shortcuts. And second, disable graphic assist from Windows, by going to Settings > System > Display > Graphics > Advanced, and disabling both “Optimization for windowed games” and “Hardware-accelerated GPU scheduling”.

Hope this helps, and good luck!
