Unreal Engine 5 Project Crashes on Startup after cloning

Hello Unreal Engine Forum Users!

My Unreal Engine 5 Project is crashing on startup, after I cloned it yesterday evening.
The editor loads, and crashes/fails at around 93%.

Glad to know it’s rare :eyes: ! I have actually managed to narrow down the reason behind the startup crash. It’s a Widget Blueprint being Created in the PlayerController. What’s interesting is the fact that creating that same widget in any other class (I am creating it in a MainMenu Widget) works fine. It specifically seems to happen when adding a CreateWidget in the PlayerController.

  • The output of the CreateWidget is being cast to a UserWidget Variable.

I will personally try to narrow this issue down even further. I’ll copy the project and see what happens when I break the pin link between the cast to UserWidget variable, or when I have an unconnected CreateWidget in the PlayerController BP.
I’ll keep you updated.

Fantastic, thanks for the update! I’ve seen this kind of issue on gamemodes or player controllers that have some sort of instantiation on construct logic, but it’s usually not a memory link. Keep me in the loop!

Well its even more interesting since the Widget isn’t created on Construct or anything. It is genuinely just as soon as there’s a custom event and input pin leading into it it causes the crash. Super interesting, but kind of weird.

Tried just having a CreateWidget BP hovering around with no input pins and only referencing the widget, and the engine didn’t crash. As soon as I hooked the event up it started crashing again. I have looked into these forms of issues, and noticed that it can often be because of migration between UE4 and 5. The PlayerController I did actually migrate to 5.0.3, and the MainMenu widget referencing it was created fresh in UE5, so I’m guessing that this is the issue. Don’t really have any idea on how to work around/fix it though -.-

It’s entirely possible that the migration changes can very rarely cause things like this. Bps being ever so slightly off or corrupted. Usually best to remake it in a new class. You can likely copy EVERYTHING at once if the BP isn’t massive + functions, but duplicating it might have an undesirable effect. I would also open up the reference viewer and get a good handle on everything that touches it.

That would be my last resort. The PlayerController for the game is absolutely massive in size, it handles a lot of Multiplayer Framework, and it is referenced in basically every other BP. If It’s the last thing that’ll work, I will create a new 5.0.3 version of the Controller!

Absolutely! Out of all of the times I have seen an issue similar to this, a fresh BP generated in the new version is the last resort, and generally works. If either ends up working out, let us know on the thread and mark it as a solution for the future users that come across it!

Alright, know this is quite late but I figured out it was a Structure issue inside the Widget. The error you pointed out - the callstack pointing back at an old garbage collection seemed to be causing it. It’s still weird that creating the widget worked inside the MainMenu, but oh well - Structs are quite random after all!
Definitely always need to refresh every reference to a structure in every blueprint when you commit updates.
