Hello guys, I need a solution for a crash in my Unreal Editor, when I try to open the editor it says “gpu crashed or d3d device removed”. I found some solutions from a few years ago like changing the registries, downloading old or studio drivers but nothing worked. Most of the problems I saw in google, Unreal Engine crashes after a while from opening the editor, but I cant open the editor either. So any suggestions what to do? I cant do anything right now.
Greetings @SaintFrost11
Welcome to the Unreal Community. I’m actually very familiar with that error having had it myself at one point. There can be a few different causes. Are you only having this with one specific version of UE or does it crash regardless which version? Also, what are your full system specs?
Hey @FrostyJas
Thank you for the warm welcome, I tried to open Unreal Engine 5.4.2, 5.3.2 and 5.1.1 but the error is showing up all the time. I have Intel Core i7-14700HX processor, RTX 4060 8GB Laptop GPU and 16 gigs of ram. I even redownloaded win11 but it didn’t solve the problem either.
Right on! Thanks for the response! Are you running the project in DirectX 12? If so, could you swap it to 11 and see if it happens there?
The problem is not only for a project, I can’t open the main unreal editor either.
Oh wow! Have you tested your GPU to ensure there’s no issues there? If it’s loose/not seated well that can cause that error. I even had a colleague a while back who was having due to some incompatible ram. Have you added any new hardware to your PC since it first started?
I think its seated well, i dont have problems when i play games; though its running very well. And I have a laptop i didnt changed any hardware parts since i got this pc.
Oh, the PC you’re using is a laptop? Have you made any additions or changes to the hardware? (GPU, RAM, etc)
Nope, didnt change anything
Do you run anything such as Riva Tuner Statistics Server in the background? (Comes with MSI Afterburner often)
Nope, I have Hp Omen Gaming Hub, closest to Msi AfterBurner. But i dont think it is th problem either.
I’m switching my os to win10 from 11. I hope that works.
Had you checked to see if it happens with gaming hub closed? (It’s probably not the cause. Afterburner does seem to cause some issues like that sometimes. But, OGH is completely different from my experience). Also, let me know the findings after the OS change.
I ran into the same issue, even though Unreal Engine versions 5.2, 5.3 and 5.4 had all been working normally before, suddenly all of these gave the “GPU Crashed or D3D Device Removed.” error each time when opening Unreal Engine.
I tried updating to the latest Nvidia and Intel graphics drivers, but that didn’t solve it.
What solved it for me was going into the “Nvidia Control Panel” > “Manage Display Mode” and setting that to “Nvidia GPU only”. So clearly there’s an issue with the Intel graphics driver…
Nope, it didnt worked either. I don’t know what to do
Hey guys I found it, changing the default gpu in Omen Gaming Hub solved the problem. Thank you for your advices!
