Unreal Engine 5.4.4 crashing when opening

Having issue with Unreal 5.4.4 crashing when being launched from the Epic Launcher.

Copy/pasting error and will go in to detail below.

Environment is a school lab, and issue is present on all 25 of the workstations. All workstations are Alienware R12 units running Windows 11. OS is patched to current, and BIOS is up to date. GPU in the units are 3060ti running the latest Studio drivers build. Application and cache have been installed with default paths.

When launching 5.4.4 from the Epic launcher, the application will start to open and then crash with the above error when run from a non admin account. When run from an admin account, it works without issue. This happens with accounts that have previous projects as well as accounts that have no projects started.

Version 5.3.2 is also installed and it launches without issue for standard and admin users.

I’ve tried removing C:\Program Files\Epic Games\UE_5.4\Engine\DerivedDataCache\Compressed.ddp as well as verifying the application in the Epic launcher as outlined in https://forums.unrealengine.com/t/unreal-5-4-crash-will-not-start-deriveddatacache/1776423 but the issue persists.

Have tried uninstalling and reinstalling the engine, without any change in the error.

There are no VPNs and to my knowledge nothing in the firewall blocking any server connection, as all connections were allowed at time of install. But as I am new to troubleshooting Unreal Engine, I would be interested in knowing how to look for error logs that might indicate otherwise.

One thing that caught my attention is the error looks to be referring to a D:\ path. While there is a second HDD with the D: label, it was formatted at semesters beginning and is completely empty on all the systems. So there is nothing where the file path points.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Welcome to the Unreal Engine Community Forum. That last thing you said caught my attention bout the drive. Take a peek here UEFN crashing on startup. - Is this the same problem, by chance?

are you launching an existing project or the editor directly from the Launcher?
For an existing project you should find the logs inside the Project/Saved/Logs/ folder.
In case you are starting the Editor without a project the log file should be written to
%localappdata%\UnrealEngine\5.4\Saved\Logs ( which should expand to C:\Users\YourUserName\AppData\Local\UnrealEngine\5.4\Saved\Logs).

If you could attach the log files or find any logs concerning the DDC (starting with “LogDerivedDataCache” “LogZenServiceInstance”) that should hopefully help us get more info.

It’s likely this is a permission issue with the Zenserver.exe that is used to store the DDC cache in 5.4 by default.

It´s not your problem nor HW/SW issues.
Epic made that 5.4.4 update and now scenes keep crashing for everybody.
I am able to open few of my scenes, but when I hover my mouse on top tabs or when I open some level, it crashes immediately.

How about skip the ■■■■■■■■ Epic, and make some update.

Apologies on not getting back sooner, other projects ended up taking focus off this one.

I’m launching the editor directly from the Launcher. When the splash page comes up, it gets to 0% loading before crashing. Due to this, I can’t even create a project to launch from if I wanted to. I was seeing some other posts mentioning Zenserver, and was seeing a number of LogDerivedDataCache matching up with Zenserver in the log.

I just ran the launcher today with the same issue, so the log below is from a few minutes ago. Hopefully this will help shed some light on what’s going on.

I appreciate the thought Frosty. I don’t believe this matches up with the issue at hand as 5.3 is able to launch without issue and the users don’t have explicit rights to the drive(s) in the system. And that’s a change I’m hesitant to make given that this is an open lab environment. But thank you.

The log indicates that the launching of zenserver.exe fails with error code 1260.
This is the description of the windows error code:

1260 (0x4EC) **ERROR_ACCESS_DISABLED_BY_POLICY**
This program is blocked by group policy

So it looks indeed like the permissions / group policy settings in your school lab prevent the executing of the zenserver executable in Unreal’s default install location (C:/Users/tasavant/AppData/Local/UnrealEngine/Common/Zen/Install/zenserver.exe).

This is one of several special cases that we didn’t see in our internal and licensee testing, so currently the engine is unable to provide a useful error message or fallback for this case. We’re looking to improve this in future releases.
You can use one of the following workarounds for now:

  1. Try launching the zenserver executable from the above folder manually before starting the engine. This would also clarify whether your user account is able to run the executable from there at all. It might be that your users is allowed to execute it, but other programs like the UnrealEditor cannot run executables from that location.
  2. If permissions don’t allow you to launch from the AppData folder, you can try running the zenserver.exe from the Engine Installation Directory: C:\PathToYourUnrealInstallation\Engine\Binaries\Win64\zenserver.exe before starting the Editor.
  3. Temporarily disable Zenserver support in the Engine by running the editor with “-DDC=InstalledNoZenLocalFallback”. You can do this by creating a shortcut to C:\PathToYourUnrealInstallation\Engine\Binaries\Win64\UnrealEditor.exe and adding the -DDC=... parameter in the Target field of the shortcut.
  4. As an alternative to the startup parameter you can also edit the Engine/Config/BaseEngine.ini config file in the Engine Installation and rename the section [InstalledDerivedDataBackendGraph] to something else and then rename the section [InstalledNoZenLocalFallback] to [InstalledDerivedDataBackendGraph]. This way the engine will always start with the InstalledNoZenLocalFallback values and doesn’t require a startup parameter.

Ideally you would still be able to run with the zenserver, as it provides better performance and DDC data management than the old filesystem based DDC storage.

Thank you for the help on this. Having our admin team look at things, it looks like Epic changed the digital signature on their executables. Our guys were able to add a policy to allow the Epic digital signature trust was found on their executables. “Signed by O=EPIC GAMES INC., L=CARY, S=NORTH CAROLINA, C=US”.

so I fixed the problem, it was actually problem with OSD in Asus GPU Tweak settings.
Disable this guy, found this issue in previous posts, but it appeared for me after updating to 5.4.4 for some reason…
