I prefer to be upfront. It seems that many people in the Unreal Engine 4/5 communities, soon to be Unreal Engine 6, are seeking help online to gain knowledge about this stuff. Some think college is a waste of time and that people get sucked into it. The job market is tough here in the USA, and it’s challenging for people like me to find work. It’s difficult to find a supportive community on Reddit where people are building something meaningful. Many seem to prioritize money over knowledge, and it’s disheartening. I’m shedding light on this issue that seems to go over some people’s heads. My personal belief is that I dislike working in jobs that aren’t the right fit for me. I have a Welder AWS certification and also a Combo Welder certification. I’ve been passionate about game creation for many years and wanted to get into it before I die. If others want to act recklessly online, that’s their choice. It often takes time to provide helpful answers to some people,in this community and many individuals are striving to improve themselves in game development. Can we please get a real unreal engine discord that actually have helpful people inside of it.
There’s certainly places to go if the folks here are rubbing you the wrong way for some reason…
if you feel ignored here it’s probably just because there are so many people on an international scale so many people are not on at the same times and then your post is likely at the bottom of whatever way they search for the problems they can solve
there’s also likely for lack of a better words a lot of newbs newbies and beginners and a lot of the pros and experts have their own things to deal with
That said if your looking for a discord
Might i recommend this one This guy used to work for blizzard awhile ago and is the creator of Heartbound he has an excellent community and even job potential chat areas
i would say that college is the way of doing it if your bad at teaching yourself things
i know any company worth their salt cares more what you’ve done
so on your resume its gonna be a bit of a different resume than what you’ve done for other jobs
a brief history of where you’ve been because it hardly matters the last 3-4 maybe 5 will do just fine you could even have the last bullet say other place inquire if interested
so instead of saying for example Tig welding i have all these certifications and can even do underwater stuff blah blah
It’s now just a quick bulleted list
-Worked for food restaurant
-Worked in welding with some specialties
-3d Cad certified
-Self taught game development
then you get into it and say 1-2 pictures and a link to each project
so you’d say i recreated a minecraft like game from scratch and learned noise maps and how to use chunks for performance i made a Satisfactory like game to learn how to make placeable buildings etc etc full list pages and pages
you might leave the other game names out of it and mainly focus on the skills but i think you get the idea your resume now becomes your skills and showcase
Sadly most of the good game companies are in Seattle or California in the USA otherwise your looking overseas where most games actually come from from what I’ve seen and played at least short of Blizzard and some “bad” indie games
if i were hiring an artist/3d modeling kind of person for example i might skim through their past jobs to see what kind of person they might be
then I’d see okay did they at least try and make a decent resume, alright what’s it about…
Okay they got an art degree neat they’ll know all the fancy words
[picture] oh dang they made that
[picture] oh wow i could never do that
Skills
learned blender
–can make characters
–Objects
–some animation ( okay so they’ll have to learn a little stuff )
but the hard stuff looks great colors grading hues swatches ← or whatever its called when their a similar pallet etc etc
i could go on with the resume thing for a long time i had a class specifically on resumes back in HS if you do want help rearranging your resume to look better to game companies if their listing the degree thats one thing if their not looking at what you can do that company is SO not worth it
My point being it’s how they’ve applied it and presented these skills that matters the degree just tells you they shelled out money to go through formal education and might know a lot of terminology not necessarily have the brain for being artsy or in the case of a programmer some math skills and c++ knowledge or BP in the case of UE
Editied:typos and readability sorry if your in the middle when the update happens
And do Game jams put them all in your resume just behind the stuff you’ve done yourself and are the most proud of benefit of this is immeasurable as you never know who these people know or will become, some dude that you just end up making a mid project with could one day become the CEO of blizzard you never know
If you truly want to learn it there’s plenty of good resources out there
Nobody on reddit is supportive they all want to be right
