Oh wow, a UI design that doesn’t look like a kid in basement listening to Sabbath designed.
Any , we will get editor reskin, like… this year ? It’s on roadmap and editor cloud really use some UI pass to reduce those fancy graphics to something simpler and more modern.
Can we talk about how bad the launcher is yet? Particularly the vault. Massive grid of uninformative buttons, no list view, scrolling on mac is too fast, scrolling on windows is too slow. Same for the projects view above the marketplace vault.
I know a good designer, would Epic like to contract him in to fix this up?
holy cow! looks good it would be nice to have something like that OP!
I don’t remember if I posted this before. Please forgive me if I am repeating this. But I would like you guys to think about replacing the icons both for menus and for the toolbar. It should be easier to tell one icon from another and understand what the icon does by just looking at it. I think current icon set has some issues in this field. It might be just me though.
These are really good; I thought I was being spoiled when they silently updated the graph editor nodes; if they implemented something like this (which tbh has a Visual Studio vibe to me) I’d feel very at home in the engine. I agree with the others, though. It feels like a lot of space is wasted; I always have to rearrange the editor every time I start a new project or install the next version of the Engine. I’d like it if comments could auto-magically be “shrunk” and they’d just become a tile that, if you clicked on, would pop open. Just make the Event Graph easier to navigate. :l Not to mention how much I hate how they did the wires. THEY’RE NEVER PIXEL PERFECT. THERE’S ALWAYS A SMALL BIT OF DIAGONAL. D: And half the time I try to align them it looks WORSE or the one I wanted to stay put winds up being the one that moves. AGH. Organizational Pity Party Problems.
To be clear, how I’d fix that is by shifting the node input/output Y position to match the wire. Maybe the input always matches where the output is coming from? I mean, obviously it would only be able to shift within X distance and maybe “Can Reorder Node Y position to best fit wire” could be an option? For instance, the Int * Float node has Int on top but much of the time the Int should be on bottom for me. Anyway. I’ll stop before I end up making a feature request xD
A lot of the things suggested in this thread just look hard to read to me. Everything in the UI should be done to maximize speed. Colors should be at saturation to boost contrast and decrease visual recognition time. If there is space available, things should uncollapse automatically. Buttons should be big enough I can click them without slowing my mouse movements down. In general, if the UI looks pretty, its because you put form over function.
I mean… wouldn’t more people start using UE4, if this was it’s UI?
And… the more the people the more the money that UE4 devs will make…
So why not make a change for fks sake?
It would even make US work better, if we got changes like that time to time. Its motivational.
Nobody wants to be working in the same place for years. Some of us want a change.
Adding this theme, would be a win-win-win… I cant see anything negative.
Perhaps they are trying to keep the ue4 UI more practical, than attractive?
But if its attractive, then wont that make us work more?!
You are saying that putting form over function means we’ll get more function?
I would like to point out that the best UV tool on the market is headusUVLayout. Feel free to google the UI.
The UI ALWAYS has to be more efficient. With very few exceptions everything suggested here is eye-candy that would slow work down in the long run. Someone mentioned the launcher vault earlier. I can’t even begin to explain how useless that overhaul would be. In my 3 years of work with the engine I looked at the vault maybe 10 times, if I am being generous. You go there, add a plugin to your project and be done with it, you don’t use it every day for hours.
The “problem” with UE4 and its community right now is the fact that there are countless newbies / amateurs wondering where all the crutches and eye candy are. Epic in the meantime HAS advertised a “engine for!” mantra, while working most closely to support actually serious, experienced developers. Mind you, I don’t see the latter as a negative, if people want training wheels Unity is one download away.
Just my 2c.
New UI’s make you work more, cause you have to spend time getting used to it. In the rare case that a new UI actually improves the usability, that’s great, but as BlackRang just wrote, often thats not the case and pretty UI != productive UI. Besides… one thing that looks pretty to you, might look horrible to another.
Don’t tell me a craftsman wants to paint his tools every once in a while with a new Color. Perhaps Change your room?
Want optional theming for the Editor? Fine by me, but looking at all the broken and missing tools I’d rather see the time spent fixing than giving the broken Saw a new paint.
Finally!, I have always hated editor’s ux (I prefer white themes). I absolutely love it.
While waiting for this theme, I made my own quick & dirty version : [FREE] LazyTheme - Theme for UE4 Editor ( get rid of those ugly tabs and windows 7 buttons ) - Community & Industry Discussion - Epic Developer Community Forums
Thanks guys for all your amazing feedback and updates!
I’ve finally recovered
and planning to slowly alter the theme.
If you have more ideas, suggestions, bad experiences with other screens or windows,
f.e. launcher, material editor, blueprints etc. please pile them here.
Thanks!
bumping this, since has been more than a week without news, i’m really excited to see this theme in real-time keep it up
Looks amazing can’t wait.
The design is brilliant! I really love it!
In order to achieve the design OP linked, all you have to do is modify the brush textures in the engine directory. The layout will still be the same, but if you want the ‘minimalist’ look (I don’t think it’s very clear to be honest, it’s like having lots of icons on a single colour background and it’s easy for your eye to get lost) - you can just replace those textures with solid colours.
Editing 3000 textures is not easy. I thought I was batching a Blue hue and then it turned out purple.
that’s quite a tedious process to do, and i bet that if you uninstall ue4 for some reason, you’ll lost that configuration
