Unreal Editor will consume 2x CPU or more when minimized or not in focus on OSX

Hi Guys,

Repro video here. Basically, anytime you minimize editor CPU usage jumps 2x, after a while it 3x. For me usage pattern was:

  • 50% (normal)
  • 90% (minimized)
  • 130% (after one minute)

reason I noticed was that my fans started going nuts :slight_smile:

EDIT: This is also case if editor is not in focus.

This is still case in 4.1. CPU jumps from 40% to 120% when UE4Editor window is minimized.

On Windows this issue also present but not is such a scale :slight_smile:
I have 4 core CPU and Editor permanently loads it ~35%, even when minimized.
Actually when I don’t need Editor to load CPU but don’t wanna close it I suspend it via proccess explorer from SysInternals.

Hey ! Yeah, this is still happening, right now 4.2.1 jumps from 80% CPU on empty scene to 140% on minimize.

Hi . Looks like this issue is fixed in 4.3. Just checked against preview build that I’ve just built :slight_smile: Looks likeusage sits around a very sane 50% when now in focus and drops to 5% when minimized. Also editor is running very slick overall :slight_smile: Very nice! Thanks you for your efforts!

This looks to be fixed in upcoming 4.3 build, just checked by building changelist 2122033.

Not in focus: 50% CPU
Minimized: 5% CPU
