Unreal Editor 4.8.3 crashes on startup

I have just reinstalled V4.8.3 of the Unreal editor. Everything seems fine until I try to open a project I just started. Windows tells me the unreal editor has crashed, and then the unreal editor crash reporter appear. I’ve attempted to start a project a few times, and I don’t think it’s because I don’t have enough RAM, and I doubt it’s because of the integrated graphics I have. I could be wrong though.

Hi ndiniz -

There are some known issues with older driver versions of the Intel Integrated Graphics Cards. Check your DXDIAG and if the driver version begins with a 9 or 10 then you need to update to the latest version which can be found here:

Download Intel Drivers and Software

If you are running a setup which ignores the integrated graphics and uses an Nvidia or AMD graphics cards, then it could be the switching settings on those cards are not switching to use the more powerful graphics card and are instead using the Integrated graphics card in which case you will want to look at those settings in your Control Panel.

Finally if none of those situations fit you, can you post a copy of your DXDIAG and the Machine ID from your submitted crash reporter and also look into the Windows Event Viewer to find the crash as well and submit those event logs. An explanation on how to do this can be found here:

unable to find any logs pertaining to the Unreal Editor itself. Where should I look for these logs? I looked in the event viewer, but found nothing.

Hi ndiniz -

Looking at your DXDIAG, looks like you need to update that Intel Graphics Driver. Try that and see if you still crash.

graphics drivers I have are current. Got an alert saying V4.9 of unreal editor was released.

Hi ndiniz -

Your DXDIAG version is 10.18.10.4226. The most current version offered by Intel is 15.36.21.64.4222. Many users who have reported similar issues have either had to contact their Laptop manufacturer if you are pulling drivers off their page or downgrade to a version 9 then upgrade to version 15.

If you have dual graphics then you will need to adjust the switchable graphics settings in the AMD Catalyst Control Center OR the Nvidia Control Panel to ensure that the Engine (UnrealEngine.exe) always uses Max Performance card and not Power saving settings.

If you go back into your Windows Event Viewer and look at crashes (errors) that occurred around the same time as when the editor crashed for you then you will see am Application Error which makes reference to a igXXXX.dll system file which is the Integrated Graphics Driver which is out of date.

OK, I made some adjustments to the Intel graphics settings and everything is back to normal! consider it case closed!!!
