I decided to start learning Unreal and see what the fuzz is all about, and before the download, the Epic Installer says it takes around 30 GB. But, after the installation, the engine is take ridiculous 115 GB of my SSD.
Searching around I saw some people in this very forum saying that you only need to check and uncheck some boxes on the options window and the disk space will reduce to around 30 GB, but it didn’t work for me. I checked and unchecked everything, reinitiated the launcher, and the Epic folder still takes 115 GB. I uninstalled and installed again, with the same problem. I don’t have anything else checked, only the minimum components necessary to run the engine.
you can change the location of you r"vaultcache" to a different drive in the ue launcher settings
It holds a copy of all assets you’ve downloaded and its inside epic.
as for making it smaller, unchecking the other platforms like linux/mac should bring the size down for the main engine folder to 30-50
Its not my vault, like I said on the first comment, I’m starting (trying, at least) to use Unreal for the first time, so I don’t have anything on the vault (at least, anything besides the default content). I don’t have anything else checked on the instalation, any other platforms, for example. I made sure of this on the second time I reinstalled the engine, and still takes 115 GB.
It’s a launcher bug. For some reason it’s very frequent when upgrading from 5.0.2 to 5.0.3 or when downloading 5.0.3 from scratch.
Open the version options:
And either check an option that is unchecked, or uncheck an option which is checked. I recommend “Engine Source”, since it’s the smallest one. It’s just important that the on/off state of at least one of the checkboxes is changed before clicking apply:
I suspect that the bug causes it to install literally everything, and disregard the state of the installation options. Not 100% sure, but only when I check nearly all of them does it add up to the crazy 115-120GB install size.
I already did that, went to the options window, checked and unchecked everything, because I saw same people here in the forum doing that, but nothing changes.
I’ll try again, install the engine for the third time.
It worked! The default installation again took 115 GB (even with all the options unchecked), but after checking only “Engine source” and hitting apply the launcher deleted all the other extra stuff.
