Unreal crashes when opening material, mesh, or new level.

The crash occurred today after I created a new material and attempted to open it.

When I re-launched the engine (4.24.3) I could no longer open any material or meshes (static or skeletal), or even the level I was just in. I receive the same crash message regardless of which asset type I try to open. I can open textures, blueprints, and levels I have not included in the package list without issue. This applies to engine content as well. Even my backups of the project are effected, even the ones that are nearly a month old.

I have tried:

  • Reinstalling the Engine and Launcher
  • Ensuring my graphic card drivers are up to date
  • Clearing Shared Data Caches
  • Clearing up all redirectors
  • Disabling non-built in plugins
  • Switching between DirectX 11 and 12

I’m at a loss of what to try next. I appreciate any advice you have to offer.

Turns out I needed to disable “compress mesh distance fields”
