Unreal Crashes / Freezes computer when editing Virtual Textures/Heightfield Mesh

Currently i am using the Virtual Heightfield Mesh plugin, and it has been working fine in UE-5EA and Preview versions. After updating to UE-5 release, ive been having a lot of issues when editing or viewing an asset or material that works with the Virtual heightfield and virtual textures.

Seemingly randomly, either unreal Freezes completely and is stuck on 100% gpu usage, or my whole computer freezes and becomes unresponsive, no mouse movement or sound, and i have to hard restart the computer.

This has happened during:
-Opening a level with a heightfield mesh and waiting 5-10 seconds,
-Editing input/output nodes to Virtual Texture output/sample in a material,
-Browsing the content browser and opening a folder with virtual texture materials/assets,
-Placing an actor with a material that uses virtual textures in the editor,
-or simply by pressing play in a level with virtual heightfield mesh

No idea if the recent update changed anything, or if what im doing is causing these crashes.
Any help would be appreciated!

Hey, I see this is pretty old but I was having similar issues with Virtual Textures freezing the editor and needing to be closed when trying to apply them. I came across a fix for me that worked which was to switch the Targeted RHIs in project settings from DirectX12 to DirectX11. You can search for it in all settings or look in the Platforms Windows section for the setting. If it is the same issue best guess is it may be due to an issue between DirectX 12 and some hardware. In my case I believe due to using an AMD card.

Absolutely. Same issue, same solution. DirectX 12 is not compatible with all machines unfortunately.
