Texas placed “Tencent Holdings” on it’s Prohibited Technologies list. Epic Games software is on the prohibited list due to 40-48 % owned by Tencent Holdings. Therefore the Unreal Engine cannot be installed on any computers of any college in Texas. So basically shutting down one of the major softwares utilized at any college teaching Computer Gaming in Texas.
That’s kind of ridiculous. I generally understand the general worry about foreign entities (government) that may not have our best interest in mind, owning/controlling software that has influence over the public. I suppose this could possibly apply to content/games specifically put out by Epic that may/may not be influenced by them, but a game engine? Yeah, that’s ridiculous.
Not to mention, they aren’t even a majority shareholder, so how much influence/impact can they truly have? It would at least make more sense if it targeted an ownership above 50%…
